How Is an Anxiety Disorder Diagnosed?

The diagnosis of anxiety disorders is based on the identification of excessive and persistent symptoms of anxiety or fear that cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning, according to the criteria established by the American Psychiatric Association in the DSM-5 and by the World Health Organization in the ICD-11.
